The nose, chin, eyes, lips, and ears all work together to create facial balance—and some faces are more balanced and symmetrical than others. Since your nose is the most prominent feature of your face, irregularities are easily noticed..
Dr. Samimi believes that the goal of a rhinoplasty is to create a balanced facial appearance.
As even minor changes of the nose can be very noticeable, Dr. Samimi believes in a subtle refinement and not a drastic change. This also avoids long term problems associated with removing too much tissue.
A cosmetic rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job” is a surgical procedure which changes nasal contour and size to create a more balanced appearance . A reconstructive rhinoplasty or functional rhinoplasty is performed to open blocked nasal passages and improve breathing.
A rhinoplasty is generally performed in a surgery center under general anesthesia.
Dr. Samimi usually makes a small incision in the bottom of the nose that extends into each nostril. This is called an open rhinoplasty. Your own cartilage can be used as grafts, but sometimes Dr. Samimi may have to use an implant.
Depending on the extent of the procedure, there can be varying amounts of pain after the surgery.
Dr. Samimi typically uses packing inside the nostril and also a splint on the inside and outside of the nose. The packing dissolves in about a week and the splints are removed after two weeks.
The bruising can last for about three weeks, but swelling can last for over a year. You should avoid strenuous activity following surgery.
You may be able to return to work within two weeks after surgery.
Can my rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Yes! A rhinoplasty may be combined with a variety of cosmetic surgical procedures. Facelifts, fat injections to the face, eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), and brow lifts can all be combined together to minimize your overall downtime and help you achieve a more youthful look.
Ask Dr. Samimi and his team about all of your cosmetic concerns and we will be able to develop a customized treatment plan.
Are there any alternatives to rhinoplasty?
It has been described as a “liquid rhinoplasty” or “non-surgical rhinoplasty” and involves injecting a hyaluronic acid dermal filler (typically Juvederm Voluma) into the areas in the nose to camouflage a bump or dent, or simply create symmetry. The dermal filler is injected in small precise amounts. During the procedure, Dr. Samimi will ask you to look at your nose and provide feedback so you will have total control over the shape and contours created. After the dermal filler is injected you may experience minimal redness and swelling, that usually dissipates in a few days. Most patients return to their usual activities immediately. Dermal fillers are broken down by the body over time, so you can expect to do repeat treatments yearly to maintain the desired effect. Please keep in mind that if you are considering a rhinoplasty to correct structural defects that interfere with breathing, then a surgical rhinoplasty would be a better option.
It is important to note that treating the nose with dermal fillers is a highly advanced technique and should only be performed by someone with extensive understanding of facial anatomy. There are important blood vessels in this area and their accidental obstruction may result in serious consequences, such as tissue necrosis or even non-treatable blindness.
Will health insurance pay for the cost of a rhinoplasty?
A functional rhinoplasty to improve breathing or correct a deformity caused by an accident, may be covered by your insurance. A cosmetic rhinoplasty to improve the shape of your nose is not covered by insurance.
